What is the True Gospel?
How Can I be Saved?

With so much confusion in the world today around the issues of religion, the path to God, and salvation, the following questions need to be asked:

What is the true Gospel?

How Can I be Saved?

Many people are confused about what the word "Gospel" actually means. However, the Bible clearly tells us that the Gospel is basically this - the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. This is what the early Christians proclaimed and this is the message that Christians should hold central today. The Apostle Paul preached this message quite clearly:

"Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel...Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures" (Read all of 1 Cor. 15:1-6)

This message of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is central in emphasis when one examines the preaching of the early Christians (see also: Acts 2:22-24, 32, 36; 10:38-43; 13:23-39; 17:3). So, the Gospel is focused on the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ and the work He has accomplished for each one of us. The truth is not found by being part of any religious group, church, or organisation, but rather by joining yourself to Christ, who said: "I am the way, and the truth, and the life" (John 14:6). He is the doorway to all truth and our salvation. He said: "I am the door, if anyone enters through me he will be saved" (John 10:9).

The Bible tells us that our sin separates us from God (Romans 5:12, 6:23), but that Christ took our sin upon Himself so that we can be righteous before God (2 Cor. 5:21).

Many people have become Christians by simply coming wholeheartedly to Christ in an attitude of humility, faith, and repentance.

Repent (Mark 1:15; Acts 3:19)
Believe (John 3:15-16, 36; 5:24)
Come to Jesus (Matt. 11:28; John 5:39-40, 6:35-37, 41-45, 65; 7:37-39)
Receive Jesus into your life (John 1:12; Rev. 3:20; Col. 2:6)

Some people find it useful to pray a prayer, similar to the following. This is just a suggestion based upon the above Scripture references. However, the formula is not important. If you are sincere, and really turn to Christ with all your heart, God will hear your prayer and give freely to you His gift of salvation.

Lord Jesus Christ, I believe that you died for my sins and rose again to give me a new life. I am sorry for the wrong things I have done, said, and thought. I know I have sinned. I ask you to forgive me of my sin and come into my life to change me and give me a new start. I receive you into my life now Lord Jesus and will follow you from this day on and for always. In your name Jesus. Amen

If you prayed the prayer above, or one similar to it, believe that God has heard that prayer and has saved you. You can know that you have salvation now. It is not something to be earned, but something that was given freely by Christ (Eph. 2:8-10). Those whom Christ saves, He is able to keep. Be aware of this wonderful assurance of eternal life and security in Christ (John 10:27-29; Rom. 8:38-39; 1 John 5:13).

Get to know Christ (Phil. 3:8; John 17:3)
Follow Jesus and obey His teachings (John 12:26; Col. 2:6)
Be baptised as a declaration of your faith in the Lord (Acts 10:47-48)

Finally, pray and read God's Word regularly, and find a good Bible based church so that you can meet with other Christians and be encouraged and built up in your faith.
